Both protagonists have guilt and are constantly reminded of the consequences of their betrayal. This guilt leads them to redeem themselves and rid themselves of sin through the telling of their story and to give the people they betrayed a voice, since ‘that is what true redemption is, when guilt leads to good’. In the novel The Kite Runner the betrayal of self, guilt and redemption is already laid out to the reader through the first paragraph. Khaled Hossani begins with the foreshadowing of a catastrophic betrayal by the use of first person narration though Amir to hint this event has changed and affected Amir’s life in a major way, ‘I became what I am today, at the age of 12 on a frigid overcast day, in the winter of1975’. As the novel goes on we learn of Amir’s motivation for his betrayal to Hassan. In the alley when Amir decides to turn away from Hassan being raped he is then committing the absolute betrayal. He justifies to himself that Hassan is ‘just an Hazara boy’ and uses this motivation as well as his longing for his father’s love and approval to warrant his reason for betrayal. As Amir engages in the last betrayal of accusing Hassan of stealing, he watches Hassan and Ali leave through the window representing a distorted view and separation of Hassan and Amir. Amir is faced with consequences of his actions through out his life and the opportunities for redemption. Amir attempts to store away the guilt and wrongdoing but ‘it claws it way back in’ until he his overwhelmed by the guilt and seeks redemption. In the film Atonement it begins with the non-diegetic sound of a typewriter and the image of the camera looking up towards bryony that is typing a story, this highlights the power of story telling and that bryony seems godlike and in control of peoples lives. Wright uses this non-diegetic sound of the typewriter all throughout the film, to suggest a story is being retold. When we see the scene ‘two figures by a fountain’ we see bryony’s first initial motivation of where she starts to think badly of Robbie, through a window shot, representing a distorted view from a young, sexually naive girl. Wright uses the technique of ‘flashback’ to give the audience two perspectives on the event, bryony’s perspective or the real, truthful perspective. This positions the audience to judge how bryony has distorted her view of reality and the truth. When bryony is asked by the detector did you know it was Robbie or did you see him, bryony commits the ultimate betrayal to Robbie and Cecilia by saying ‘yes. I saw him’. Bryony is constantly aware of the consequences of her actions. In the writing of her novel she creates an imaginary scene where she is confronted by Robbie and Cecilia. This is a reminder to her of what she has stolen from them. The focus on the bed and the close up of bryony looking at it awkwardly highlights her guilt of the destruction she has caused. In both texts, both protagonists have guilt for their betrayal and this guilt leads them both to their telling of the true truth. The betrayal both characters have committed has destroyed and separated their relationships between the people they loved, and they are forever reminded of the consequences they have caused and the happiness they have stolen. In bryony’s case she has stolen away Robbie and Cecilia’s life together and their happiness, and in a way she has caused Robbie’s death. In the novel Amir lives with the fear and guilt of what he has done to Hassan as he finds out that Hassan his is half brother. Amir returns to Afghanistan after receiving a phone call from his fathers long time friend informing him about Hassan’s death and that Hassan son has been put into an orphanage. As a part of Amir’s redemption he saves Hassan son and brings him back to America. In both texts the protagonists tell their story for their redemption and atonement. By telling the whole truth of their betrayal, they provide them with a voice, and the ending they caused them to lose. In the last scene of Atonement, bryony is being interviewed about her novel, she tells the audience about the imaginary scene in the book when Robbie confronts her, and states, that by giving Robbie and Cecilia this ending, she is giving them the ending they both so longed for and missed out on. She says ‘she would like to think this isn’t a sign of weakness, but a final act of kindness, in giving them their happiness back’. Although both texts have different motives for their betrayal, they both have a similar way in seeking atonement for their guilt, by retelling their story, and giving back the happiness they stole, and isn’t ‘that what true redemption is†¦. when guilt leads to good’. In the film directed by Joe Wright and the novel the Kite Runner by Khaled Hossani, betrayal, guilt and redemption is set into place throughout the entire texts. While both protagonists have guilt from their betrayal, and are constantly reminded of the consequences their betrayal has caused, this leads to their effort to seek atonement. By their retelling of the truth, they attempt to free themselves from their guilt and provide the people they betrayed with a voice, as well as to grant them with the happiness they took away, and reflect what true redemption is.

Biography of Gilda Radner, American Comedienne and Actress Gilda Radner (June 28, 1946 – May 20, 1989) was an American comedienne  and actress known for her satirical characters on Saturday Night Live. She died of ovarian cancer at the age of 42, and was survived by her husband, actor Gene Wilder. Early Years Gilda Susan Radner was born on June 28, 1946 in Detroit, Michigan. She was the second child born to Herman Radner and Henrietta Dworkin. Gildas father Herman was a successful businessman, and Gilda and her brother Michael enjoyed a childhood of privilege. The Radners employed a nanny, Elizabeth Clementine Gillies, to help raise their children. Gilda was particularly close to Dibby, and her childhood memories of her hard of hearing nanny would later inspire her to create the character Emily Litella on Saturday Night Live. Gildas father ran the Seville Hotel in Detroit, and served a clientele that included musicians and actors who came to the city to perform. Herman Radner took young Gilda to see musicals and shows, and had a fondness for silly jokes that she shared. Her happy childhood was shattered in 1958, when her father was diagnosed with a brain tumor and subsequently suffered a stroke. Herman languished for two years before dying of cancer in 1960, when Gilda was just 14 years old. As a child, Gilda dealt with stress by eating. Her mother, Henrietta, took 10-year-old Gilda to a doctor who prescribed her diet pills. Gilda would continue a pattern of gaining and losing weight into adulthood, and years later, would recount her battle with an eating disorder in her autobiography, Its Always Something. Education Gilda attended the Hampton Elementary School through the fourth grade, at least when she was in Detroit. Her mother didnt care for Michigan winters, and each November she would take Gilda and Michael to Florida until the spring. In her autobiography, Gilda recalled how this annual routine made it difficult for her to establish friendships with other children. In fifth grade, she transferred to the prestigious Liggett School, which was then an all-girls school. She was active in the schools drama club, appearing in many plays throughout middle and high school. In her senior year, she served as the Class of 1964 vice president, and performed in the play The Mouse That Roared. After graduating high school, Gilda enrolled at the University of Michigan, where she majored in drama. She dropped out before earning her degree, however, and moved to Toronto with her sculptor boyfriend, Jeffrey Rubinoff. Career Gilda Radners first professional acting role was in the Toronto production of Godspell in 1972. The company included several future stars who would remain her lifelong friends: Paul Shaffer, Martin Short, and Eugene Levy. While in Toronto, she also joined the famed Second City improvisational troupe, where she performed with Dan Aykroyd and John Belushi and established herself as a bona fide force in comedy. Radner moved to New York City in 1973 to work on The National Lampoon Radio Hour, a short-lived but influential weekly show. E. when she landed a role in a new Gene Wilder movie, Hanky Panky, that began filming in 1981. Already unhappy in her marriage to G. E. Smith, Gilda pursued a relationship with Wilder. Radner and Smith divorced in 1982. The relationship between Gilda and Gene Wilder was rocky at first. In an interview years later, Wilder said he found Gilda needy and demanding of his attention at first, so much so that they broke up for a time. They soon reconciled, however, and on September 18, 1984 1984, Gilda and Gene married while on vacation in France. Cancer Gildas happy ever after with Gene wouldnt last long, sadly. On October 21, 1986, she was diagnosed with stage four ovarian cancer. While filming Haunted Honeymoon the year before, Gilda couldnt understand why she  constantly felt fatigued and rundown. She finally went to her internist for a physical exam, but the lab tests only showed a possibility of Epstein-Barr virus. The doctor reassured her that her symptoms were likely stress-induced, and not serious. When she started running a low grade fever, she was instructed to take acetaminophen. Gildas symptoms continued to worsen as time passed. She developed stomach and pelvic cramps that kept her in bed for days. Her gynecologist didnt find any cause for concern and referred her to a gastroenterologist. Every test came back normal, despite Gildas deteriorating health. By the summer of 1986, she was experiencing excruciating pain in her thighs and had lost a startling amount of weight, with no obvious cause. Finally, in October 1986, Gilda was admitted to a hospital in Los Angeles to undergo extensive testing. A CAT scan revealed a grapefruit-sized tumor in her abdomen. She underwent surgery to remove the tumor and had a complete hysterectomy, and immediately started a long course of chemotherapy. Doctors assured her that her prognosis was good. In June of the following year, Gilda had completed the prescribed chemotherapy, and her doctor scheduled an exploratory surgery to make sure all signs of the cancer were gone. She was devastated to learn that it wasnt, and more chemotherapy was required. Over the next two years, Gilda endured treatments, tests, and surgeries that would ultimately fail to eradicate the cancer. Gilda Radner died on May 20, 1989 at Cedars-Sinae Medical Center in Los Angeles, at the age of 42. After Gildas death, Gene Wilder joined two of her friends, cancer psychotherapist Joanna Bull and broadcaster Joel Siegel, to found a network of cancer support centers. Looking at the current situation in Iraq, there were so little, or no improvement at all ever since America waged a war on â€Å"terrorism,† pointing the finger to Iraq. When it was planned to train Iraqi soldiers so that they could â€Å"defend† themselves, leaving them to the hard work in their own backyard, one thing has been overlooked. Training a small population of Iraqi’s to defend or fight for their welfare is not the solution, hence it could further lead to something worse. It is only adding fuel to the fire, igniting the civil war Iraq is experiencing in its backyard (Bereuter, 2004). It will only increase the horrifying truth of the Iraq war, and its negative effects on the humans – death, starvation, poverty, and hatred of its own countrymen. It also has its toll on economy, pestering both Americans and Iraqis. There are various variables to consider when you talk about this war. These are the dependent and independent variables. The first variable that is a proof of the war’s failure was the increasing death toll. It is a rather dependent variable on the war because it is directly affected by the war itself. The military death toll have greatly increased, wasting the precious lives of the soldiers willing to do any of the President’s bidding. Non-Iraqi workers and contractors death toll has also doubled, bringing fear in the hearts of those who wish to work in there. The insurgencies and Iraqi resistance has then risen in a great number of times since the war has started. Death is the biggest price that both sides will pay in this Iraqi war. Roughly a lot of Iraqis have died defending their country – or fleeing it. U. S. -trained Iraqi police and National Guards were unable to protect the people, to provide safety for everyone, as it was promised by the United States government. On the other hand, not only were the United States losing the war in Iraq, they are also losing precious lives of the soldiers fighting for a lost cause. More than a thousand American soldiers and their families have suffered the consequences of the Iraq war. If death wasn’t enough, it also caused a tragic change in the economy of both countries. Both countries have increasing number of bodies being piled on the ground. Another dependent variable is insurgency. It is a consequence of the United States’ campaign on Iraq. Many people decided to take arms and fight US instead of helping peace to prosper. Insurgency has grown stronger than ever, as it can be seen on the number of deaths and losses from both ends. As the U. S. continues to stay in the Iraqi backyard, the more these Iraqi insurgents would mass up and attack people, the more the problem will continue for Iraq and the US, just like an incurable headache. The Pentagon points out that in November 2003, there were only about 5,000 Iraqi insurgents. But as of September 2004, the number of these people have blown out 400% 20,000. And considering that the number of dead Iraqi resistance fighters were around 24,000, the grim fact is that it is even larger in reality (Lieberman, 2005). An independent variable of the United States war against Iraq was the impact on economy. It is a rather independent factor that you consider because it is not connected to the so called â€Å"campaign against terror. † But whether people like it or not, war has affected the economic situation of the country and the whole world. Not only was this war wasting precious lives, it is also wasting hard-earned money. About 151 billion U. S. dollars went down the drain as the cost of this war continually increases. The money which came from America’s taxpayer’s pockets are surprisingly being wasted on bullets, guns and ammunitions, vehicles, and more, considering that these things are being wasted, and have no real benefit as of late. Ending the war: the price for Osama’s head The United States, along with the United Nations and the European Union have resorted to a lot of efforts in order to solve this problem. This includes empowering a few chosen Iraqis to defend themselves and be able to start a new government. This effort has been considered futile since Iraq as a country is being plagued with internal conflicts – civil wars between various ethnic groups. So if you empower any of these groups, there is a tendency that they would just go against each other, so instead of solving the problem, you are giving them another blow in the head. Another effort which they had resorted to was hunting down the famous terrorist leader, Osama bin Laden (Kirkpatrick, 2004). As the Al Qaeda’s leader, he is considered to be one of the most influential heads of the Iraqi resistance. They think that killing him would mean victory in the Iraq war. They see that his presence – his very existence, is considered to be an encouragement for the Iraqi people to take arms and fight the â€Å"invaders† in their lands. Using the terrorist attacks in the country as an example of what this man can do, the United States government has waged an all out operative to search for bin Laden. The army literally bombarded the possible hiding places for Osama bin Laden, but still returning empty handed. Rumors about his death came out, but the lack of evidence has left the people doubting. What the United States overlooked was not Osama bin Laden is not the problem, so putting him out of the scene was definitely not the solution. Osama bin Laden was only a part, just a fraction of what the US government is up against with. He may be an influential leader, but still, there are other factors that they have to consider if they really want to end this war against Iraq. Iraq is in the middle of a very turbulent civil war; different groups in the country are fighting among themselves for survival, since each of them claims that they can’t live with any of the other groups. It is a communal war, wherein they are slugging it out with other groups; Sunnis fighting against Shiites, Kurds against Sunnis, and Shiites against Kurds (Diamond, 2006). In these groups there are other minorities fighting on multiple front, thus making the war complex. Osama bin Laden as a terrorist icon doesn’t necessarily prove much of an importance, since between these Iraqi’s lies greater conflicts. These conflicts could lead to mass slaughter, thus creating chaos in the global level.

To lose both looks like carelessness.†(Act 1) When he finds out that the handbag he was in as an infant belongs to Miss Prism he embraces her and calls her â€Å"Mother†. Jack has been lonely without the knowledge of his parents and when he gets a hint of what might be a reality, he lights up like a Christmas tree without acknowledging that it might turn out to be false. This also holds true for Jack and Algernon. Algernon is alone and Jack asks for his help pretending to be his brother. Jack and Algernon both are helping each other during the time they are posing as brothers. They have each other’s company so that they aren’t alone. Another good example of the saying, â€Å"No man is an island†, is the love between Jack’s younger wicked â€Å"brother†, Algernon and Cecily. It is not love at first sight, but rather she had fallen in love with him months prior to the day. Wilde has meant for us to interpret this as Algernon, even if everybody in his life leaves him, he will have Cecily’s love for him in both of his or her hearts. Even if Algernon never knew that Cecily is in love with him, Algernon will never be alone. With his feelings toward Cecily known as said by Algernon: â€Å"Cecily is the sweetest, dearest, prettiest girl in the whole world.†(Act 3) The final few pages of the book also have a very important turn of events that portray that people aren’t alone at all in the world. Lady Bracknell tells Jack about who his parents are: â€Å"You are the son of my poor sister, Mrs. Moncrieff, and consequently Algernon’s older brother.†(Act 3) Throughout the play, Jack and Algernon thought that they were less than brothers, just friends. But in the end it is known that they are in fact brothers and they were oblivious to the fact. This further explains that without even knowing the truth about one another, they will always be there for each other.

Philosophically, reality is whatever we think or perceive. There is no true or real perspective. Our perspective depends on our morals and beliefs. All our life, we perceive knowledge and information through different forms of language. Hence, our perspective is also limited by the language. Language is one of the unique things that people have. Language puts limits on our thoughts. For example, when someone says dog, we all picture a different dog, therefore we perceive the information differently. Similarly, religious books influence the way of our thinking through the words or language in the book. Those words are ideas of someone else but we get so influenced by those words that we base our morals on it. Words are part of language which fixes an image in our minds. When we say dog, we picture a dog, not a lion or fish, because we are imprisoned by the language that we ourselves created. Those words in the biblical texts are from a perspective of a different person but we believe in his/her words, borrow the idea and we make our own beliefs which is still inspired by someone's perspective. Those beliefs define the world around us. Thus, through language we create our own limited world and imprison ourselves. Likewise, in the excerpt Cosmic Prison from the book The Invisible Prison by Loren Eiseley, the author argues, that human perspective is limited by language, culture and origin. In the Cosmic Prison, the author, Eiseley attempts to point out that perspective is limited and bounded by language.
